As the name suggests, hourly 24-hour home care involves caregivers visiting the client’s home for a specific number of hours per day, based on the client’s needs. Caregivers typically provide support by splitting the 24-hour day into three 8 hour shifts or by splitting the day in half and working two shifts of 12 hours. The 8-hour shifts are a great plan for those that feel their needs are not at the highest level, but would like to have care and assistance 24/7. These shifts are more cost effective and potentially more flexible. The 12-hour shifts are geared for those whose needs are now at the state of requiring the highest level of care. Also, having only two shifts allows for less hand overs, and a better understanding of the client’s needs as they go through their day in real time.
Hourly caregivers are there as much or as little as necessary and provide companionship, assistance with getting in and out of bed, toileting, medication reminders, light housekeeping tasks such as laundry and meal preparation – whatever the senior may require.
Live-in home care is a form of 24-hour home care that has a caregiver reside in the client’s home. This allows the one caregiver to be available to provide care throughout the day and evening. Depending on the agreed upon arrangement, this caregiver can stay in the home for consecutive days. The weekly schedule is most commonly split into 4 and 3 day live-in shifts minimizing costs, and the number of different providers in the home in any given week. This has proven to be less stressful on the individual as well as their families.
